Set in the same world as the Windrose Chronicles but with mostly fresh characters. Renaissance rise of the merchant class type of setting.
Kyra is an arch, redheaded sorceress born to a powerful merchant family. She's a very sympathetic figure. She adores her family but her training was a scandal and the man who tutored her was a monster.
Her sister is under a curse to die on her wedding day and Kyra comes back home to try to save her, causing her father all kinds of difficulty and falling in love with her future brother-in-law along the way. Kyra has one of my favorite growth arcs. She remains prideful and sharp-tongued while growing in accepting that she isn't an island and constantly learning to be kinder.
The murder mystery is well thought out and engaging. The female characters aren't all competition or sisterhood but a realistic combination.
I really liked this book.
